Agronomic factors affecting yield and quality of extractable leaf protein 1 concentrate (LPC) in forage crops Organic Eprints
Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The study aims to find the optimal cutting strategy and forage plant species for organic production of leaf 11 protein concentrate (LPC) and to investigate if sulfur fertilization have a positive effect on the content of the 12 sulfur containing amino acids cystine and methionine. The protein recovery in green juice and amino acid 13 composition of the proteins were measured for 23 common and alternative forage species grown in an 14 organic cropping trial. Total protein yield in green juice was measured for three different cutting strategies (2, 15 3 and 4 cuts per season) in three different forage species mixtures. The forage species mixtures were given 16 three levels of sulfur fertilization (0, 30 and 60 kg S ha-1). Results indicated that the economic...

Anaerobic digestion for closing the loop of a biorefinery for organic farming: Production of biogas and organic fertilizer from process residues Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
The availability of organic animal feed for monogastric animals and organic fertilizer is in many regions a limiting factor for the further spread of animal breeding and crop cultivation in organic farming. The production of these two commodities is the main target of a green biorefinery concept based on regionally organically grown grass biomass, called Organofinery. Anaerobic digestion of the residual streams after protein separation for the organic feed product is a key process to extract both the energetic and the nutritional value of the residual biomass in the biorefinery. Biogas potentials of the residual streams from the processing of red clover and clover grass (press cake obtained from screw pressing to produce green juice and brown juice after...

Biorefining of proteins from grass clover as an innovative solution to a truly sustainable organic production Organic Eprints
Fog, Erik; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette.
To shape a common solution to challenges with low crop yields, proper protein supply and insufficient climate mitigation capacity, biorefining of protein feed from grassland crops for monogastric animals (including human) is introduced to the organic production system. Bio-refining using mechanical and natural fermentation techniques are compatible with the organic principles and standards. Crop yields from Danish field trials with alfalfa, clover and grass-clover mixtures demonstrate average yields around 12 tons dry matter per hectare yielding on average 700 kg extracted protein per hectare and 3000 to 6000 m3 methane per hectare. With these yields the profitability of biorefining of organic protein feed is calculated and shows a positive economic...

Identifying resistance genes in wheat against common bunt (Tilletia caries) by use of virulence pattern of the pathogen Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Backes, G.; Müller, Karl-Josef; Gallehr, Andrea; Scherrer, Bettina; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Spieß, Hartmut.
455 wheat varieties and breeding lines were grown in the field, contaminated with 7 to 11 different races of common bunt. Based on the reaction of the lines to the different virulence races, it was possible to group the lines by differential varieties with known resistance genes, indicating that they may have one or two of the resistance genes Bt1, Bt2, Bt5, Bt7, Bt13, BtZ or Quebon-resistance. Based hereof, genetic markers will be developed using a genome-wide association study (GWAS).

Influence of the development stage of perennial forage crops for the recovery yields of extractable proteins using lactic acid fermentation Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette.
The extraction of leaf proteins from perennial forage crops within a green biorefinery concept represents a promising approach to face the increasing demand for protein arisen in the organic farming sector to feed monogastric animals. Given the background, the present research aims at assessing the protein extractability from three plant species i.e. chicory, red clover and timothy, at different development stages and investigating lactic acid fermentation as the key method for the extraction of leaf proteins. Based on our results, up to 86% of the proteins in the green juice were recovered in the leaf protein concentrate (LPC) by means of lactic acid fermentation. Red clover presented the highest protein content and resulted in the extraction of 65e98 kg...

Influence of the development stage of the plant biomass for protein yield in a green biorefinery. Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette.
The scarce availability of organic animal feed for monogastric animals is hindering the development of organic farming in many regions. A green biorefinery platform called OrganoFinery aims at producing organic protein-rich animal feed based on organically grown green biomass. The freshly harvested green biomass is separated into a solid fraction (press cake) and a liquid fraction (green juice). Subsequently, the green juice is inoculated with specific lactic acid bacteria which ferment the soluble sugars into lactic acid triggering a pH drop and thus, the precipitation of proteins. Last, proteins are extracted by centrifugation and the organic protein concentrate is suitable for feeding monogastric animals. Green perennial crops can be harvested several...

Nutrient recovery in a green biorefinery for production of feed, fuel and fertilizer for organic farming Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
Nutrient recovery from organic green biomass after processing in a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein feed, biogas and fertilizer for organic farming was investigated. Mass balances in terms of wet weight, TS, VS, C, N, P, K and S were evaluated for processing red clover and clover grass into protein concentrate, press cake and brown juice according to the green biorefinery concept. The analysis was based on mass flows and composition of each of the fractions produced. Depending on the biomass, between 60-79% of C and between 52-63% of N, P and S in the fresh biomass were found in the press cake, while only 6-10% of C, 8-15% of N, but up to 27% of P and up to 26% of S were found in the brown juice. In contrast, less than 45% of K was...

Yield performance in heritage spring wheat and barley varieties in organic farming Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Grupe, Per; Ytting, Nanna Karkov.
The grain yield in cereals has increased considerable since the beginning of industrialisation of agriculture, including introduction of modern plant breeding 100-150 years ago. Since beginning of this period, plant breeding has selected and bred varieties suitable to the changing agricultural conditions, and hence to increasing extent focused on conventional high input agriculture as this type of agriculture developed. Most pronounced is probably the plant height, and old high plants are likely to lodge at the nitrogen level normally seen in modern industrial agriculture. Modern varieties are characterised by a high degree of specific resistance genes against selected pathogens on the expense on a broad durable polygenic resistance (Robinson 1995)....
